During life’s Storms, Become the Buffalo

The buffalo faces it's storms

I know working through tough times isn’t easy. It often seems more comfortable to turn the other way and try to outrun the storm. But invariably, the problem won’t go away, it just lasts longer and gets worse.

Wilma Mankiller, the first ever female chief of the Cherokee nation once said,

“Cows run away from the storm while the buffalo charges toward it – and gets through it quicker. Whenever I’m confronted with a tough challenge, I do not prolong the torment, I become the buffalo.”

What does this mean to you?

When confronted with a problem, do you try to avoid it, or do you put your head down and find a way through? Just image yourself as a bison steadfastly and slowly progressing in the face of a blizzard rather than running in the other direction.

The battlefield of life will be filled with challenges. Work problems, health issues, financial pressures, bills, the list can go on and on. When life seems like a storm, become the buffalo.

So just put your head down and take that step.

Do something. It can be a small step, something manageable, just get the momentum started! Then take another step, and another.

There is no telling how long your storm will last. But you know as the buffalo you’ll get through it quicker and in better shape than as the cow.
