
Personal training has become a rapidly evolving science, due to man's current inactivity in normal life, as personal trainers we have to adapt and update regularly to stay on top of our clients needs.
In the 70's and 80's a majority of the work force was still in manual labor, this gave them a foundation of functional strength, so training could be simple conventional lifting and cardiovascular exercise. Now however the majority are behind a desk and the only thing they push is a pen or keys on their computer.
This is why 'Functional Training' has come to forefront of fitness. Functional Training is not just a buzz word, it's a way of redeveloping the body's functional ability. This includes flexibility, balance, core strength, dynamic stability as well as the more conventional strength and cardiovascular conditioning.
The way I achieve this is through NASM™ OPT (Optimum Performance Training) Model. The OPT Model consists of three main parts Stabilization Training, Strength Training and Power Training.
Stabilization Training is the first area used because joint stability is the key to keeping us injury free, also the more stable you are the more of you strength and power your body will let you access. Stabilization Training can also burn up to 50% more calories than conventional training due to the number of muscles used, thus making it an excellent weight loss tool.
Strength Training then follows this reinforces are new gained stability and enables us to condition the body for our other goals such as weight control, muscle tone and pure strength.
Power Training is performed last and only when sufficient stability and strength have been shown to support the exercises used, as this training generally places the most stress on the joints involved.
These prime areas are then linked by your personal trainer, to create a periodized routine that ensures continued progress of any fitness goal.
